The Red Wall: Almost Done

I’m almost done with the Cargo’s Last Stand project

12/30/09

I have only a few photos left to post;
though, the red wall is still intact
(as far as I know).
It may get some more action.

I still need to shoot Miguel, at least.

And we still have the move to the old freight building.

We’ll see.

The Red Wall: Captain Tim Tobin

who flew the last NWA 747F freighter out of Anchorage, Alaska, 12/28/09

Tim was head of the pilots’ base in Anchorage

In a Jam

I just had to photo Don in action.
He bailed me out of a crisis 29 years ago.

Thank you, Don!

“Help!”

The blue room put this lower-deck crew in a practically impossible situation,
so Lynn solicits Don’s 30 years of experience.

Photo tech:
I missed the best shot in between these last two.
Don was moving so fast,
and I was stuck with the G11’s slow recycling time.

Shutter speed was as slow as 1/8 second in this sequence —
some shots being in the shadow,
and 2 pm was late, during this cloudy day,
one day before winter solstice,
the shortest day of the year.

Bob ‘Pineapple’ and Lehua park ship 39 for probably the last time

Ship 39 is the last NWA cargo plane to fly with the old paint scheme,
my favorite.

Our Union Man

12/30/09

Blessed are the peacemakers

John, our union rep,
stands before us again,
like he has so many times before —
his last pep talk to the pre-lay-off workforce.

It was during this very talk
that John openly demonstrated his peacemaking gift
that he’s been subtly applying all along.

Thank you, John!

The Cake

John had this made.

Reminiscing

In 2006, when we were still doing major crossloads,
Pete filmed one such operation,
which he replays here,
a few days before the major lay-off.

Watching Pete on TV

He-man!!!

… and those made-in-America buttons still won’t pop.

It’s Jimmy, laughing in the hallway.
